Garden versus deer

Although we love watching deer in our neighborhood and in the fields near our house, we are not too crazy about the fact that they eat our bean plants, our lilies, our hostas, tomatoes, etc... and the hoof prints in our vegetable garden. Here is a picture of a momma doe leading her little faun. They walked right in front of our living room window, but by the time we got the camera, they were already in our driveway. The momma led her baby quickly over to the train tracks and hid him in a thicket. Then she began to run in the opposite direction leading J away from the thicket. The faun was so tiny. It had to be only a week or so old. We were so afraid for it being so close to the train tracks, but we trust that the momma took good care of it.

J is planning to put up an electric wire around the vegetable garden, but we don't know how to keep them away from the rest of the yard. Any ideas?
